Biden Releases Statement on Capitol Attack: Jill and I are 'Heartbroken'

U.S. Capitol lockdown

U.S. Capitol lockdown

Two police officers have been injured at the US Capitol after a auto rammed into the barricade on Friday.

The lockdown at the U.S. Capitol was lifted about two hours after a person rammed a vehicle into barriers surrounding the complex on Friday afternoon, leaving one police officer dead and another injured.

News has since reported that the person who was shot is believed to have died. The law enforcement officials told the AP that the driver then got out of the vehicle with what appeared to be a knife.

Green is a Nation of Islam follower, according to MSNBC, citing Facebook content that was thought to be posted by him.

Pittman did not release the identity of the suspect. Another officer was taken to a separate hospital to be treated for his injuries, police said. It comes as the Washington region remains on edge almost three months after a mob of armed insurrectionists stormed the Capitol as Congress was voting to certify Joe Biden's presidential win.

"Jill and I were heartbroken to learn of the violent attack at a security checkpoint on the U.S. Capitol grounds, which killed Officer William Evans of the U.S. Capitol Police, and left a fellow officer fighting for his life", Biden, who was spending the weekend at Camp David, said.

"This has been an extremely hard time for U.S. Capitol Police", Pittman said at a news conference on Friday afternoon, noting the attack underscores that the Capitol Hill remains a potential target for violence.

The vehicle hit a barricade just outside the Senate, on a street that had recently been reopened after the January 6 insurrection. One Capitol Police officer died as a result of the attack, as well as four others individuals who took part or were nearby.

Pittman says the suspect rammed a barricade near the U.S. Capitol.

Earlier on Friday afternoon, witnesses reported a hail of gunfire outside the north barricade United States national legislature. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, and wish the second officer harmed in this attack a full recovery.

The incident began shortly after 1 p.m. ET, when the Capitol was placed on lockdown "due to an external security threat".

There was a heavy police response outside of the Capitol, including a helicopter landing on the premises.

"It does not appear to be terrorism-related, but obviously we will continue to investigate", Washington Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee added.

The Capitol was locked down and a National Guard team was deployed as police instructed staff to remain indoors. US National Guard troops were still on guard outside the legislature on Friday, having been posted to Washington, DC, in January after supporters of then-US President Donald Trump stormed the building in an attempt to void the results of the November 2020 election.
