Big businesses side with Democrats in clash over voting rights

Former President Trump released a statement on Friday after news broke that the Major League Baseball is moving its All-Star Game out of Atlanta following Governor Brian Kemp's approval of Georgia's new election bill.

While President Biden and other prominent Democrats like former state representative Stacy Abrams have criticized the law as an attempt to make voting more hard in Georgia, Republicans argue that's a deliberate mischaracterization of what the law actually does.

'I want to be clear: I will not be backing down from this fight. Critics say it violates the U.S. Constitution's First and 14th amendments, as well as parts of the federal Voting Rights Act that say states can not restrict Black voter participation.

After acting on former President Donald Trump's big lie that the 2020 election was stolen by enacting new restrictions on voting, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp and House Speaker David Ralston, both Republicans, tried to spin the reality of the law they'd passed by blaming the backlash it has provoked on "lies" from the left.

Facing criticism over their relative silence during the passage of the law, prominent companies in Georgia have this week condemned the law President Joe Biden described as an "atrocity" and "Jim Crow in the 21st century". The prohibition extends 150 feet from a polling place and 25 feet from any person standing in line.

Two Saturdays of early voting are mandatory, open at least 10 hours each day, 9 a.m.to 5 p.m.

"Obviously voting rights are a pillar in this country". The Democrat is being closely watched to see if she seeks a rematch against Kemp in 2022.

Some San Diego community leaders are calling on the Major League Baseball to consider Petco Park as a venue for the 2021 All-Star Game.

Patrick Smith, a lifelong Braves fan in Ellisville, Mississippi, said he thinks the league made the right decision and noted that not taking a stand would have polarized some supporters.

Fully vaccinated people can gather unmasked and indoors for Easter, CDC says
Jacy Smith, of Shirley, says she thinks these updated guidelines will also make more people want to get vaccinated. The CDC's new guidance comes as Americans gear up to travel around the country to celebrate Easter this weekend.

"When governments restrict access to the ballot box, someone has to step in to encourage these entities to roll back those measures", he said.

Abrams instead called on companies in Georgia and around the country to come off the fence in condemning the spread of voter suppression bills in several states and to support federal legislation-namely the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and the For The People Act-that would protect voting rights.

State Rep. Teri Anulewicz, a Democrat whose district includes the stadium, added: "I don't know who Major League Baseball feels they are punishing".

The Atlanta Braves issued a statement Friday saying the team is disappointed by Manfred's decision. Aaron, who played for the Braves in Atlanta and Milwaukee for most of his career, faced extensive hate mail and racism as he closed in on breaking Babe Ruth's home run record.

Jeffrey Guterman, a retired mental health counselor in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, who calls himself an amateur baseball historian, said the move shows baseball changing with the times.

"In the moment when I heard the news, I was very surprised", he said.

He said protesting Georgia's new GOP-backed election integrity law was "the best way to demonstrate our values as a sport". A new ballpark for the events wasn't immediately revealed. The provision instead intends to apply to people passing out advertisements, or gifts, something already contained in similar laws in Minnesota, Montana, and NY, which has a likewise policy that applies to "meat, drink, tobacco, refreshment, or provision".

Kemp criticized the Major League Baseball for its sudden decision, citing "cancel culture" in an interview with The Hill.
