As federal officials consider a ban on flights from a country dealing with a massive COVID-19 outbreak, a variant first discovered in India is now in B.C.

He says temporarily suspending arrivals from "hotspot countries" will give Canada time to "develop a clear set of parameters for identified the risks of emerging variants, and sharing this information clearly with Canadians".

The Trudeau government is considering new travel restrictions but has long resisted targetting specific countries.

Raywat Deonandan, an epidemiologist with the University of Ottawa, said Thursday that a variant of interest is one that is "suspected" to either be more contagious than the initial strain, cause more severe disease, or escape the protection offered by vaccines. So far, more than 13-million vaccines have been delivered to provinces and more than 10.7-million have been administered. "In view of the Covid-19 situation, it has been decided, in consultation with the EU and Portuguese leadership, to hold the India-EU leaders' meeting in a virtual format on 8 May 2021, " the external affairs ministry said.

Hospitals in India are now overflowing, and medical oxygen is in low supply.

According to the Canadian government, there have been 35 flights from India with at least one case of COVID-19 that have arrived in Canada in the last two weeks.

Reaction to Derek Chauvin guilty verdict
Chauvin's face was obscured by a Covid-19 mask, and little reaction could be seen beyond his eyes darting around the courtroom. Three other former Minneapolis officers charged with aiding and abetting murder in Floyd's death will stand trial in August.

Some other countries have already issued travel alerts with India turning into a global hostpot of the pandemic over the past fortnight but the CDC's advisory and the United Kingdom red list could have a more cascading effect.

Currently, global travellers heading to Canada are required to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test before boarding, and are also required to take another test when they land.

House leader Paul Calandra told question period that it's critical that the federal Liberals act now to prevent more variants from infiltrating Canada.

Covaxin has been found to effectively neutralise the double mutant strain, B.1.617, of SARS-CoV-2 and other variants.

As of Tuesday, the federal government was reporting 67,417 cases of COVID-19 involving that variant.

The variant has a double mutation on the spike protein gene, which our current COVID-19 vaccines target.
