One person was killed in the shooting and one police officer was wounded.

After multiple shootings in Tennessee, a local anchor mixed up live footage of a response to one shooting with footage of the police response to another at Austin-East High School in Knoxville.

"Upon approach of the subject, shots were fired", the post said.

The officer was struck at least once, police said, and transported to hospital with non-life threatening injures. There are no other known gunshot victims.

City authorities instructed families to gather at a baseball stadium near the school.

Students not involved in the incident have been released to their families.

"He's going to be okay".

KPD said preliminary investigations found it was a man that was armed at the school.

A former US ambassador to Mexico, Jacobson has been featured prominently during her time in the role. "I leave optimistically. On Friday, the White House requested US$861 million from Congress for that effort in Biden's first annual budget proposal.

"And he said he'd rather that he be hurt than anybody else, and is in very good spirits and looking forward to the successful surgery".

Biden branded gun violence an "epidemic" and an "international embarrassment" during his April 8 speech.

He added in a separate tweet that authorities were gathering information and about "this tragic situation" and that additional information would be provided later.

The school is a Title 1 school, which is a federal program that provides financial assistance "schools with high numbers or high percentages of children from low-income families", according to the U.S. education department. "It's a place where people are learning".

The newspaper reported that the school was adding three school resource officers and stepping up patrols around dismissal time. It was not immediately clear if either attended Austin-East Magnet School.

Several agencies, including the Nashville field division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, were on the scene.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee said during a press briefing that he is monitoring the situation closely, and asked for prayers. Lee backed the legislation over objections from law enforcement groups, who argued that the state's existing permit system provided an important safeguard for knowing who should or shouldn't be carrying a gun.

The United States has seen a string of shootings in recent weeks.
