Covid patients with sedentary habits more likely to die

The study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine showed that physical inactivity was surpassed only by advanced age

Researchers then compared hospitalization rates, intensive care unit (ICU) admissions and mortality rate for patients who were consistently inactive, doing some activity, or consistently meeting physical activity guidelines.

The study cites the U.S. Centers for Disease Control's (CDC) risk factors for severe COVID-19 outcomes, including advanced age and comorbidities, such as diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease - but said there was "no data" regarding the effect of regular physical activity on COVID-19 outcomes - even though a lack of physical activity is a "well-documented" underlying risk factor for multiple chronic diseases, including those associated with severe COVID-19.

Other than being over the age of 60 or having a history of organ transplant, being consistently inactive conferred the highest risk for death from Covid-19.

Several risk factors for severe COVID-19 infection have been identified, including advanced age, male sex, and certain underlying medical conditions, such as diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease, the researchers said.

In the study, carried out on Californians, the average patient age was 47 and almost two thirds were women. Their average weight (BMI) was 31, which is classified as obese.

United Kingdom officially launches probe into ex-PM Cameron's lobbying
The developments are the latest in a lobbying controversy that has dogged the Conservative former prime minister in recent weeks. Mr Cameron is yet to comment publicly about the "growing scandal", as Labour has called it.

"We know physical inactivity is one the greatest causes of death and disease globally and the UK's activity levels are not where they should be, weakening us against Covid-19".

Among covid patients, a lack of exercise is linked to more severe symptoms and a higher risk of death, according to a study covering almost 50,000 people who were infected with the virus.

Inactive patients were also 73 per cent more likely to need treatment in intensive care, and two and a half times more likely to die following their infection, according to The Irish Times.

The researchers, including those from Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in the United States, noted that this is an observational study, and as such, can't establish cause.

"What surprised me the most from this study was the strength of the association between inactivity and poor outcomes from Covid-19", said Deborah Rohm Young from the Kaiser Permanente Southern California.
