Myanmar's U.K. ambassador locked out of London embassy in apparent 'coup' by his own deputy

Myanmar's ambassador to London told Reuters he was locked out of the embassy on Wednesday, but sources said his deputy had shut him out of the building and taken charge on behalf of the military.

Protests against the the February 1 coup that ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi continued Thursday despite the killing of 11 people by security forces a day earlier.

Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Myanmar's leading champion of democracy over three decades, has been held at an undisclosed location since the coup and charged with crimes that could see her jailed and banned from politics.

Wednesday's meeting between the regime's electricity and energy minister, U Aung Than Oo, and Ambassador Datuk Zahairi Baharim prompted criticism among democracy supporters in Myanmar that Malaysia had recognized the junta.

Kyaw Zwar Minn was recalled as ambassador on March 9, the letter said.

Myanmar's state broadcaster reportedly said the ambassador, who has served as Naypyitaw's man in London since 2014, had been summoned back to Naypyitaw after making an unauthorised statement.

The advocacy group said 2,847 were now being held in detention.

"We are seeking further information following an incident at Myanmar's embassy in London", a British foreign office spokesperson said in a statement. The ambassador has been locked out since then.

Daily protests demanding a return of democracy have rocked the country and brought a brutal response from the armed forces, with nearly 600 civilians killed according to a local monitoring group.

China is viewed as being supportive of the military junta and last month arson attacks were made on 32 Chinese-invested factories in Yangon.

Kyaw Zwar Minn has broken ranks with the ruling junta in recent weeks, calling for the release of detained civilian leader Suu Kyi.

"They told me that they will fight on the street and I'm also fighting my way on the stage now".

On March 8, Mr Raab tweeted that he had spoken to Kyaw Zwar Minn and had "praised his courage and patriotism in standing up for what is right".

He accused the protest movement of wanting to "destroy the country" and said only 248 protesters had been killed, along with 16 police officers.

Suu Kyi and leading figures in her National League for Democracy party, which won an election in November that was annulled by the coup, are now in detention facing various charges. "There have been no arrests".
