Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz claims sex trafficking investigation is extortion attempt

"So by that same logic, will you take any action to remove Matt Gaetz from the Judiciary Committee while he's under investigation by the DOJ over whether he had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old and paid for her to travel with him?" she asked. But there are no rules addressing lawmakers under investigation. "They even claim to have specific connections inside the Biden White House", Gaetz said. "Those are serious implications", McCarthy said. "It if comes out to be true, yes, we would remove him if that was the case".

Gaetz said the allegations are part of a weeks-long attempt to extort his family for $25 million.

When asked about the alleged sexual relationship with the teen, Gaetz said such a person "doesn't exist".

He denied that he ever had a relationship with any underage girls and said the allegations against him were "as searing as they are false".

In an interview with the Daily Beast, McGee denied the allegations of blackmail, saying that any reports of extortion are "completely, totally false". Lieu wrote that until then, "You can't have Gaetz sitting on the Congressional Committee that has oversight over the Department that is investigating him". Gaetz then insisted Carlson had previously met "a friend" of his who he claimed was "threatened by the Federal Bureau of Investigation". He said none of the women he's dated were underage, so I still don't understand what he's saying here.

Rep. Matt Gaetz said a DOJ investigation into whether he broke sex-trafficking laws is based on "lies" and "false" allegations. But during the course of an investigation, a subject can become a target.

The Times also reports that "the investigation was opened in the final months of the Trump administration under Attorney General William Barr" with senior Justice Department officials aware of the inquiry. The lawyer has been in private practice for more than two decades.

When Gaetz appeared on Tuesday night's program, he claimed to Carlson that he is the victim of "extortion" involving a DOJ official who's seeking $25 million. McGee's biography on the firm's website says he spent six years as first assistant at a USA attorney's office and seven years as the lead attorney for the DOJ's Organized Crime Task Force.

Douglas County reports 20 new COVID-19 cases; 213 remain active
In total, 11,468 people are under public health monitoring because of identified exposure to known cases. Officials have now recorded 3,324 cases of COVID-19 in the island region since the pandemic began.

Gaetz said his family has been cooperating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and said his father was wearing a recording device, at the FBI's direction, "to catch these criminals". He demanded the Justice Department release the recordings. No part of the allegations against me are true, and the people pushing these lies are targets of the ongoing extortion investigation.

Officials told NBC News that the investigation into Gaetz began a year ago when an associate of his, Joel Greenberg, a former county tax collector in Florida, was indicted on charges tied to allegations that he had harassed a political opponent, who worked at a local school, through letters sent to his opponent's employer and through several fictitious social media accounts.

"I believe that there are people at the Department of Justice who are trying to criminalize my sexual conduct, you know, when I was a single guy", Gaetz told Axios.

The elder Gaetz claimed that while he told the Federal Bureau of Investigation "I'm willing to wear a wire and be cooperative", he was "asked to say things that are not true to draw out an admission".

'You know, I've paid for flights, for hotel rooms.

"I don't remember the woman you are speaking of or the context at all, honestly", Carlson cut in to say, visibly stunned.

There was no mention of Gaetz in the indictment, which provided no further information about the sex trafficking charges against Greenberg.

Neither Gaetz's office nor a Fox News spokesperson immediately responded to a request for comment from The Washington Post early on Wednesday morning.
