IMMINENT: Joe Biden To Announce Executive Orders on Gun Control

Several mainstream outlets reported that Biden has faced "increasing pressure" to implement gun control measures after recent mass shootings, but the president vowed long before taking office that he would take action on firearms once in the White House. "When these firearms turn up at crime scenes, they often can not be traced by law enforcement due to the lack of a serial number". They can be bought by minors and people who would not pass background checks.

Other measures include boosting support for agencies involved in tackling community violence and ordering the first comprehensive report on firearms trafficking in the United States since 2000.

However, the president will have an uphill task. The law expired a decade later, however, and has never been renewed, with Republicans increasingly rigid in opposing what they depict as an attack on the more than two centuries-old constitutional right to bear arms.

What are the proposed measures?

Senior administration officials confirmed that the Justice Department would issue a new proposed rule aimed at reining in ghost guns within 30 days, but offered no details on the content of the rule. These guns are often homemade and harder to track than mass-produced guns.

ATF is a law enforcement agency within the Department of Justice that strives to safeguard the public from criminal organizations and activity, including the illegal use and trafficking of firearms. The rule would designate pistols used with stabilizing braces as short-barrelled rifles, which, under the National Firearms Act, require a federal license to own and are subject to a more thorough application process and a $200 tax.

The Justice Department will also be asked to draft a "red flag law" which states can then use to create their own legislation.

The official said Mr Biden would continue to advocate for legislation and called the administration's planned actions on Thursday initial steps. The US Senate is now split 50-50 between Democrats and Republicans, with Democratic Vice-President Kamala Harris holding the deciding vote.

Through much of his career, Biden has been active on gun control efforts, often boasting of his role in beating the NRA in legislative battles during the Clinton administration, when he was a senator.

What has the reaction been?

.

The administration's steps drew praise from gun safety groups.

"These actions could require law-abiding citizens to surrender lawful property, and push states to expand gun confiscation orders", the NRA tweeted, adding that Biden's nominee for head of the ATF is "a gun control lobbyist" while offering that "@NRA is ready to fight."

The administration official told reporters on Wednesday that Biden is concerned about all forms of gun violence, not only mass shootings but also domestic violence and forms of community violence that disproportionately affect Black and Brown communities.

"Each of these executive actions will start to address the epidemic of gun violence that has raged throughout the pandemic, and begin to make good on President Biden's promise to be the strongest gun safety president in history", said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety.
