As many as 398 people died due to coronavirus-linked complications, taking the total death toll to 59,551.

Of the fresh cases, Maharashtra reported 63,729, followed by Uttar Pradesh (27,426) and Delhi (19,486), according to the data. The tally comes as number of daily new cases are soaring in states like Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Delhi among others, according to the official data of Union Health Ministry.

While the case tally has now reached 37,03,584, the cumulative recoveries stand at 30,04,391 with a record 2.72 lakh samples being tested in the last 24 hours. Just 45,335 recoveries were reported, as the State's recovery rate dipped to 81.12%.

Ten states account for 85.83 per cent of the new deaths.

With a steady increase for the 37th day in a row, the active cases have increased to 15,69,743, comprising 10.98 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate dropped to 87.80 per cent.

As it turns out, all the four cities that reported the highest number of fresh cases per million population over the last month are in Maharashtra.

India reported a record daily increase of 234,692 Covid-19 infections over the last 24 hours taking the total tally to more than 1.45 crore cases, health ministry data showed on Saturday. Out of the new cases, 9,917 were reported from Bengaluru Urban alone. A single death took the total death toll to 1,512. India's Covid-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7 a year ago, the 30-lakh mark on August 23, the 40-lakh mark on September 5 and the 50-lakh mark on September 16.

Fortunately, nine states and union territories (UTs) have not reported any Covid-19 death in the last 24 hours.

Now 35,14,181 people are in home quarantine and 25,168 people are in institutional quarantine.
