The incident - the latest in a spate of at least seven deadly mass shootings in the U.S. over the past month - unfolded at a FedEx operations centre near Indianapolis International Airport after 11pm local time, police said.

As employees' relatives, friends and colleagues gathered at a nearby hotel afterward, some expressed frustration at being unable to reach workers at the site, where company policy bars many employees from having mobile phones to avoid distractions. When they arrived, they found an "active shooter incident", Cook told reporters during a news conference early Friday.

Cook said that the gunman had died and the public is not believed to be in immediate danger.

Chris Bavender, a spokesperson for the FBI's Indianapolis office, said that they are helping the police with the investigation. No crime was identified at the time.

McCartt said Hole was a former employee of the company and last worked for FedEx in 2020. The shooter was also placed under psychiatric detention a year ago, officials said.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she was "horrified and heartbroken" by the shooting and called for congressional action on gun control. McCartt also said authorities are still identifying the victims and that not all of the victims' families have been notified.

The shooting "began in the parking lot and then he did go into the building. for a brief period of time before he took his own life".

"There was no confrontation with anyone that was there", he said. "There was no disturbance, there was no argument". In January, police say a teenager shot and killed four family members and a pregnant woman. Most employees aren't allowed to carry cellphones inside the FedEx building, making contact with them hard.

In a statement Friday after the new shooting Mr Biden said "we must act" to end the scourge of violence killing too many Americans.

Carson later said she had heard from her daughter Jessica, who works in the facility, and that she was OK.

FedEx said in a statement that cellphone access is limited to a small number of workers in the dock and package sorting areas to "support safety protocols and minimise potential distractions".

"This is a devastating day, and words are hard to describe the emotions we all feel", he wrote in an email to employees.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday assured that the Government of India will provide all possible assistance to the families of the victims who were killed in a mass shooting in the United States city of Indianapolis on Thursday (local time).

On March 22, 10 people were killed in a shooting at a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado. "Our Consulate (in Chicago)@IndiainChicago is in touch with the Mayor and local authorities in Indianapolis as well as the community leaders", he said in a tweet.

"It stains our character and pierces the very soul of our nation", Mr Biden said.

The coalition's executive director, Satjeet Kaur, said more than 8,000 Sikh-Americans live in Indiana.

A witness said he was working inside the building when he heard several gunshots in rapid succession.

Another FedEx employee, Levi Miller, told NBC's "Today Show" he ducked out of sight when he saw a hooded figure holding what appeared to be an AR-style semiautomatic rifle who shouted and opened fire outside the facility.
