"What has been published about the arrest of Prince Hamzah is not true", said Joint Chiefs of Staff head, Major General Yousef Huneiti.

These people known as the Herak have in recent weeks called for protests against corruption and the authorities had cracked down on several demonstrations, detaining dozens.

King Abdullah has ruled Jordan - which borders Israel, the Palestinian territories, Syria, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia - since the 1999 death of of his father, King Hussein, who ruled the country for close to half a century.

"I recorded this video to make it clear that what has been said officially is not a reflection of what is actually happening on the ground", he said.

Tribes who dominate the security forces form the bedrock of support for the kingdom's Hashemite monarchy.

Hamzah's videotaped statement came after two former senior officials and other suspects reportedly had been arrested for "security reasons", even as authorities denied that Hamzah had been detained or placed under house arrest.

The tradition of the ruling Hashemite dynasty under the 1952 constitution gives the crown to the eldest son, but the monarch retains the option of naming a brother to be next in line.

A proponent of economic reforms, Awadallah resigned as chief of the royal court in 2008 and has long faced stiff resistance from an old guard and an entrenched bureaucracy that flourished for years on government perks.
