This comes after news that Jordanian security forces arrested a former adviser to King Abdullah, a member of the royal family and others on "security related" grounds, the Petra state news agency said.

Since then a number of the people I know, or my friends, have been arrested, my security has been removed, and the internet and phone lines have been cut.

US State Department spokesman Ned Price said Washington was "closely following" the events in its close regional ally.

Abdullah stripped his half-brother Hamzah of his title as crown prince in 2004, saying he had made a decision to "free" him from the "constraints of the position" in order to allow him to take on other responsibilities.

Hassan bin Zaid was formerly King Abdullah's special envoy to Saudi Arabia.

In a videotaped statement leaked to the BBC, Prince Hamzah bin Hussein, half-brother of Jordan's King Abdullah, said he was visited early on Saturday by the country's military chief and told "I was not allowed to go out, to communicate with people or to meet with them".

Hamzah is the son of the late King Hussein and his fourth wife, the US-born Queen Noor. He has good relations officially with Abdullah and is a popular figure close to tribal leaders.

But the prince had been "asked to stop some activities that could be used to shake the stability and security of Jordan".

Jordan's economy has been been battered by the pandemic, which has hit hard its population of 10 million people and more than 600,000 Syrian refugees.

The Washington Post said the former crown prince was "placed under restriction" as part of a probe into an alleged plot to unseat the king.

The United States and Saudi Arabia also expressed support for Jordan's King Abdullah II over the weekend.

State news later quoted an unnamed security official who denied reports that a 20-vehicle force had raided Hamzah's home in a suburb of West Amman, placing him under house arrest and detaining members of his security detail and members of his staff.

I pray that all Jordanians will remember that I have always to tried to serve them to the best of my ability with what limited resources I have had, that I always will, and that God willing the situation will improve if we are able to come together and make our voice heard.

"The Kingdom affirms its complete stand by the sisterly Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and its full support with all its capabilities for all decisions and measures taken by King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein and His Highness Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II, Crown Prince, to maintain security and stability", according to the statement citing the Royal Court.

Saad al-Hariri, the Lebanese prime minister-designate, said: "All the solidarity with the Jordanian leadership and King Abdullah in defending the gains of the Jordanian people, protecting their stability, and refusing interference in their affairs".

Arrests of top officials and royal family members are rare in Jordan, seen as one of the Arab world's most stable countries.

Awadallah stepped down after coming under public criticism over alleged interference in controversial political and economic issues.

It declared independence in 1946, and despite having little oil wealth, severely lacking water and repeatedly being rocked by wars on its borders, the kingdom has managed to survive the regional upheavals.
