New York Times: Matt Gaetz sought preemptive pardon in final weeks of Trump's presidency

The investigation targeting Gaetz was launched previous year when Trump was still president, sources familiar with the matter have told ABC News.

Two people familiar with the discussions told The New York Times that the Republican congressman privately sought pardons for any crimes he may have committed and for his congressional allies during the final weeks of Trump's presidency. Then-Attorney General Bill Barr was briefed on the investigation's progress several times, the sources said.

Gaetz, who had always been one of the president's most ardent supporters and a consistent purveyor of conspiracy theories about election fraud, appeared on The Ingraham Angle in November 2020 with an interesting strategy pitch for Trump.

Gaetz, whose official Twitter contains a header with a photo of himself and Trump, was a central figure on the MAGA-era right and a frequent presence at the former President's rally events. Gaetz has been alleged to have met women through the tax collector, who was said to be a political ally. "Because you see from the radical left a bloodlust that will only be quenched if they come after the people who worked so hard to animate the Trump administration with the policies and the vigor and the effectiveness that delivered for the American people". The request, however, was said to be viewed by White House officials at the time as likely to set a bad precedent.

Biden introduced last week the first piece of a massive two-part infrastructure package known as the American Jobs Plan. The company would benefit from the investments made in roads, bridges, airports and broadband.

Matt Gaetz, who is facing a federal investigation over allegations of sexual misconduct, asked President Trump's White House for a preemptive pardon at the end of his term, Fox News has confirmed.

Gaetz added, "I think the president ought to wield that pardon power effectively and robustly". CNN reports a spokesperson also denied he asked Trump for a pardon. "He tried to defend him during the second impeachment".

"Just as they once falsely attacked President Donald Trump as a Russian asset, Justice Brett Kavanaugh as a gang rapist, and even John McCain as having fathered a child out of wedlock, they now attack me".

Trump's office similarly denied the Times report.
