The man Matt Gaetz accused of extortion confesses he tried to push congressman's father into bizarre Iraq scheme

Bob Kent, a former Air Force intelligence officer, told CNN's Chris Cuomo on "Prime Time" that - despite Gaetz's claims - he never tried to extort money from Gaetz's father, and that such claims are not part of the Justice Department investigation into allegations involving sex trafficking and prostitution.

Matt Gaetz published an opinion piece in the Washington Examiner defending himself on Monday, where he states that he is not a criminal and that he would not be resigning from public office.

"I want to be clear about something as we process the leaks and lies from the past week", Gaetz wrote.

In response to the report, Gaetz denied the allegations in an interview with Fox News' Tucker Carlson.

Gaetz is denying allegations that he paid women for sexual favors or was involved with any underage girls.

The Justice Department investigation began a year ago while Trump was still president.

The Washington Post reported last week that Gaetz's father, Don Gaetz, was presented with a proposal by two men to help his son if he donated a sum of money to fund the effort to locate Robert Levinson, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation agent kidnapped in Iran, it could help his son's situation.

The pond where the leak was found is in a stack of phosphogypsum, a radioactive waste product from the manufacture of fertiliser. Manatee County, the state and HRK Holdings, who now owns the property, have worked for years in finding a solution.

He added, "This baseless claim against me leaves me further convinced that the allegations against Congressman Gaetz are likewise fabricated and merely an attempt to discredit a very vocal conservative". "I'm actually not. What's particularly gross is he's the only congressman to vote against an anti-sex trafficking bill that was on the floor a year ago". McGee and his law firm Beggs & Lane issued a statement last week denying Gaetz's allegations.

Nevertheless, Kent said Gaetz's father initially interpreted the overture as a blackmail attempt.

Gaetz's broadside defense against his critics and the DOJ investigation does not acknowledge the reported beginnings of the sex trafficking inquiry-or mention Barr whatsoever.

He also predicted, "I'm sure some partisan crooks in Merrick Garland's Justice Department want to pervert the truth and the law to go after me". Nathan Nelson, a military adviser who left Gaetz's office in October, said he was questioned about whether he'd left that job because he knew of Gaetz's "involvement in illegal activities".

"I'm here this morning to state that nothing could be further from the truth", Nelson said. Without detailing them, he said he believes the charges against Gaetz are false.

Gaetz used his column to attack Democrats, news organisations and others, saying his enemies are "just repeating false allegations about a congressman who loathes the swamp and fights both sides of it on a daily basis".

Nelson told reporters that his departure from the congressman's office was not related to the Department of Justice investigation and said he had no knowledge of the allegations, as first reported by the New York Times.
