The release of updated results comes on the heels of separate data that showed the vaccine is safe and effective in 12- to 15-year olds, paving the way for the drugmakers to seek USA. and European approval to use the shot in this age group within weeks.

The end result is unambiguous good news: Six months after early trial participants got their second doses of the jab, the protection from Pfizer's vaccine is strong and is holding up.

Dogs, cats, foxes and Arctic foxes, minks and other animals were included in the clinical trials which began in October a year ago.

Bourla said Pfizer planned to seek expanded emergency authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration "in the coming weeks and ..."

In the first in-human evidence of how the vaccine protects against variants, research published by Pfizer/BioNTech on Thursday showed the vaccine is 100% effective in preventing Covid-19 cases in South Africa - where the South African variant is now common.

The vaccine is now authorized on an emergency basis by the US Food and Drug Administration.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, agreed that protection from these vaccines is likely to last longer than six months.

"Thirty-two cases of severe disease, as defined by the CDC, were observed in the placebo group versus none in the BNT162b2 vaccinated group, indicating that the vaccine was 100% efficacious in this analysis against severe disease by the CDC definition".

The companies said Thursday the new data "support previous results from immunogenicity studies demonstrating that (the vaccine) induced a robust neutralising antibody response to the B1.351 (South African) variant, and although lower than to the wild-type strain, it does not appear to affect the high observed efficacy against this variant".

In a trial of the vaccine's efficacy, which included 44,000 people, some of whom were given the vaccine and others who were given the placebo, only 77 symptomatic cases of COVID-19 took place of those who were vaccinated, making the vaccine 91.3 percent effective.

The companies also studied a subset of teens to measure the level of virus-neutralizing antibodies a month after the second dose and found it was comparable to study participants aged 16 to 25 in the pivotal trial in adults. And there are different vaccines out there with different efficacy against COVID-19 variants.

'These mRNA vaccines - it really seems the level of antibodies they elicit are so high, they are persistent.

'I would not be surprised if this is a vaccine that we only get once'.

On Wednesday, the companies said a small trial of volunteers aged12 to 15 showed 100% efficacy in that age group.

Additionally, the shot was 95% effective at preventing severe CovidD-19, as defined by the US Food and Drug Administration.
