Schools Will Shift to Remote Learning After Spring Break

Ontario schools to close, students and teachers move to remote learning by next week

Ontario schools will stay closed indefinitely to in-person learning as COVID-19 cases continue to surge in the province. "Our priority has always been to keep schools open, however sharply rising community transmission can put our schools and Ontario families at risk", said Minister Lecce.

In an announcement Monday afternoon, Ford says students will move to remote learning after this week's spring break (the week of April 12) after consulting with Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Williams.

High school students will do the same - no school on Monday, but classes resume on April 20.

However, Premier Ford and his Education Minister Stephen Lecce could not ignore the explosion of new variant cases and the spike in hospital admissions that are threatening to overwhelm our healthcare system. "Bringing our kids back to a congregate setting in school after a week off in the community is a risk that I won't take", said Ford, "We know that the more COVID spreads in the community, the more likely it is to get into the schools, which will create massive problems for all of us down the road".

"One day later, Doug Ford is closing them for weeks". To protect the most vulnerable, boards will make provisions for continued in-person support for students with special education needs who require additional support that can not be accommodated through remote learning.

That's the message in an open letter from the province's education minister Stephen Lecce. Every other school will shift to remote learning when the kids head back to class on Monday April 19th. She says her daycare was already shut down by Toronto Public Health (TPH) and they have decided not to reopen until staff can be vaccinated and schools reopen for in-person learning.

The announcement came days after a provincewide shutdown took effect in light of skyrocketing infections and hospitalization numbers.

The increasing rate of the virus spreading in communities poses "a threat to the health and safety of school communities", according to the province. In addition, during this same period of time, Ontario has seen the number of COVID-19 patients in intensive care increase from 494 to 605.

However, the provincial government said all publically funded elementary and secondary school students across the province will continue remote learning after the April break.

Child care for non-school-aged children remains unaffected; however, before and after school programs will close.
