Capitol police say a suspect rammed a vehicle into officers before lunging at them with a knife

The question of security at the Capitol has generated a heated debate in Congress amid a highly politicised environment following the Jan 6 riot and former president Donald Trump's role in inciting his supporters to violence.

One officer has died of their injuries, another is in hospital in a "stable and non-threatening condition".

Federal and Law enforcement sources told CNN that the suspect in the attack was 25-year-old Noah Green from Indiana.

"The man exited the vehicle with a knife and ran toward our officers". Moreover, worldwide media reported that his posts in March hinted at a certain degree of paranoia. He also called the government "the #1 enemy of Black people!".

US President Joe Biden reacted to the incident saying he and first lady Jill Biden were heartbroken.

An increased security presence remains around the Capitol building, where the US Congress sits.

Green is a follower of Nation of Islam, said MSNBC, quoting Facebook content that was believed to be published by him.

More than 300 people have been charged in the January attack, including members of armed extremist groups like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers. The officers opened fire and the suspect was shot dead.
