Salvage teams began removing mangled train carriages on Saturday (April 3) after Taiwan's worst rail disaster in decades killed at least 50 people, as flags flew half-mast across an island plunged into mourning.

Officials said Friday's devastating collision, which killed at least 51 people and injured almost 190, was caused when a parked railway maintenance vehicle slipped down an embankment and onto the tracks.

They suspect the truck's emergency brake was not properly engaged or was disabled.

The train derailed after hitting a truck that had slid off the road from a construction site located nearby.

As it approached a narrow tunnel, the train hit the errant truck that lay in its path, derailing numerous carriages as the devastation unfolded. Another US citizen who was on the train was reported missing, according to a statement by Taiwan's Foreign Ministry. She didn't offer details citing an ongoing investigation.

But a court in Hualien released the manager, Lee Yi-hsiang, on a bond of T$500,000 ($17,525), although it restricted him from leaving Taiwan for eight months and said he had to stay in Hualien.

Prosecutors had applied to a court to detain the manager on charges of causing death by negligence, a justice ministry official told reporters Saturday.

President Tsai Ing-wen visited a hospital in Hualien on Saturday to "express my sympathy to the families of the victims", she said.

The 408 train is one of the fastest deployed on Taiwan's network and can reach speeds of 130km/h (80mph).

Xi sent his honest condolences to the families of the deceased and expressed sympathy for the injured and wished them a speedy recovery. "At the beginning, they still responded when we called them".

The families of the victims cry as they mourn near Taroko Gorge in Hualien, Taiwan.

"When such a thing happens, I feel very sorry and I will take full responsibility", Lin said after touring the site.

However, a third could not be moved before the tracks are repaired while the other five cars were still wedged into the tunnel.

Prime Minister Allen Chastanet is saddened and has expressed condolences to the Government of Taiwan following what has been described as the worst train crashes in Eastern Taiwan in the last 40 years.

The National Fire Service said the dead included the train's young, newly married driver and the assistant driver.

The accident was Taiwan's worst rail disaster in more than 70 years.

Friday morning's crash took place at the start of the Tomb Sweeping Festival, a four-day public holiday when many Taiwanese return to villages to tidy the graves of their ancestors.

Taiwan is a mountainous island, and most of its 24 million people live in the flatlands along the northern and western coasts that are home to most of the island's farmland, biggest cities and high-tech industries.

The railway line in eastern Taiwan is a very popular tourist destination and passes along the coast in a scenic area.
