Egypt's Suez Canal Authority (SCA) may seek over $1 billion in compensation for the losses caused by the giant container ship Ever Given that was stuck in the waterway and blocking navigation for nearly a week, SCA chairman Osama Rabie said.

The last 61 ships, out of 422 ships that were queuing when the vessel was dislodged on Monday, passed through the vital trade artery on Saturday, the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) said. Such an arrangement is customary to guide vessels through the narrow waterway, but the ship's captain retains ultimate authority, according to experts.

The 400-metre-long Ever Given, which was on its way from China to the port city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands, veered off course and ran aground diagonally while it was passing through the worldwide trade route on 23 March.

Some 80 ships were passing through the canal on Friday in both directions, including a United States aircraft carrier, a liquefied natural gas tanker, and an oil tanker, the SCA said in a statement.

During the day, many giant ships and maritime units are set to cross through the canal as the northern convoy, including the U.S. aircraft carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower said Rabie.

The massive cargo ship is now in one of the canal's holding lakes, where authorities and the ship's managers say an investigation is ongoing.

The wedging of the Japanese-owned, Taiwanese-operated ship had created tailbacks to the north and south, affecting billions of dollars worth of cargo.

Rabie has acknowledged that the blockage, which began when the ship veered off course in a sandstorm, left Egypt's worldwide shipping and wider reputation on the line.

Anyone at the pub at the same time is considered a close contact and must self-isolate for 14 days and get tested immediately. They were located in New Farm by officers in the afternoon and brought back to the hospital.

"Ninety-nine percent" of personnel who worked to refloat the giant vessel were Egyptian, according to Rabie.

The Suez Canal provides one of Egypt's main sources of income, alongside tourism and remittances from expatriates.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has pledged investment to ensure no repeat of the episode, and the SCA has called for new tugboats and dredgers.

The blockage held up some $9 billion (€7.6 billion) in global trade each day since the ship became wedged in the canal.

Egypt says it is expecting more than $1 billion in compensation after the ship blocked the waterway for almost a week, according to a top canal official.

But that was achieved at a cost of over $8 billion, without significantly increasing revenues from the canal.

A search for "Suez Canal" or "Ever Given" throws up an animation of little boats parading across the top of the page.

"Economically ... (further expansion) would not be useful", Sisi declared this week.
