Utah grows more than any state; fails to add congressional district

New U.S. Census numbers due out Monday could help shift the power in the U.S. Capitol in Washington

New U.S. Census numbers due out Monday could help shift the power in the U.S. Capitol in Washington

"I am extremely pleased that we will keep all seven of our current seats in the U.S. House to provide valued and needed voices to advocate for our state and our people for the next 10 years".

The shift in seats reflects broader population trends that have seen the South and West grow more rapidly than the Northeast and Midwest for decades. Others likely to lose are Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and West Virginia.

The change means NY will have lost a total of 13 House seats since the 1970s, when the state had 39 House members. The census figures are used for reapportioning seats in the U.S. House and in the Legislature.

"Missouri like much of the central part of the nation has remained relatively stable in terms of population change", said Bill Hall, an adjunct professor of political science at Webster, Washington and Maryville universities, before the Monday data release.

New York's slow growth, however, means the state could see cuts in federal spending and aid over the next decade because some government funding formulas are tied to state population totals.

Last year's tally was the country's 24th census - a once-a-decade tradition required by the Constitution since 1790 - and it is the ninth count for which the USA government has attempted to include every person living in the country in the numbers used for reapportioning seats in Congress. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., serves as Senate majority leader, the first New Yorker ever to hold that position.

According to an EDS analysis from December, California is set to lose a congressional seat for the first time in its history.

The last time it happened was after the 1960 population count, when the state went from nine seats to eight.

Census Bureau officials today had no immediate explanation today as to how NY managed to reverse the trend.

As it stands now, Utah's 4th Congressional District will have to shed more than 31,000 voters, while the other three seats need to gain population.

The Census began in January, 2020 in the small Western Alaska village of Toksook Bay and took place amidst pandemic panic, wildfires, hurricanes and unprecedented civil unrest.

The population totals also determine how many electoral votes each state receives for presidential elections. Each state receives one electoral vote for each of its two US senators and for each House member. That means NY will have 28 electoral votes in the next presidential election.

The losses in congressional seats could affect Detroit, which shares the 14th and 13th Congressional Districts with some of its suburbs.

"Those congressional districts are equal to political power in Washington".

In Central New York, Tenney's district includes Madison, Cortland and Oneida counties, and the eastern half of Oswego County. A bipartisan group of lawmakers recently renewed a push in Congress to formally extend legal reporting deadlines for the 2020 count.

Above all, some civic activists want to boost public involvement in the decennial map-drawing that follows the USA census - a yearlong slog that is typically monitored mostly by self-interested lawmakers, partisan operatives, journalists and other political geeks.

Each of the existing 27 House districts in NY represents a population of more than 710,000 people.
