US to send support as India battles devastating COVID surge

"We are working closely with our partners in the Indian government, and we will rapidly deploy additional support to the people of India and India's health care heroes", Blinken said in a tweet.

US State Department Spokesperson Ned Price on Friday defended Washington's restrictions on the export of key raw materials for the manufacture of COVID-19 vaccines that has crippled vaccine production in India.

The White House issued a statement after the phone call which said: "The United States has given the assurance of providing raw materials to Indian manufacturers without the need for the Covishield vaccine". Further, the USA will also deploy CDC and USAID experts to help India.

India surpassed the U.S. record of 297,430 single-day infections anywhere in the world on Thursday, making it the global epicentre of a pandemic that is waning in many other countries. Earlier, a group of over 170 world leaders and Nobel Prize winners US President Joe Biden to support a waiver proposing to suspend rules of intellectual property rights for Covid-19 vaccines and treatments to boost global vaccination rates.

The wave of cases has left hospitals running out of critical oxygen supplies and the government has deployed military planes and trains to get oxygen to New Delhi not only from other parts of the country but also overseas.

"Number one, we have a special responsibility to the American people, number two, this country [US] has been hit harder than any other country around the world".

The country of 1.3 billion people is on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe, Ashish Jha, dean of the Brown University School of Public Health, warned in an op-ed published Saturday in the Washington Post. "We are ready to support", Von der Leyen said on Twitter.

Premier Ford Is In Isolation
Calandra told reporters that cabinet will meet over the coming days to determine how the government can supplement the program. Ford received one dose of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine on April 9, about 10 days before he was exposed to COVID-19.

The assistance package includes 495 oxygen concentrators, 120 non-invasive ventilators and 20 manual ventilators from surplus United Kingdom stocks.

French President Emmanuel Macron also offered his support. "We will have more to share very soon", the spokeswoman told Reuters via email.

He said it was important to work together to identify ways to overcome bottlenecks in medical supply chains and expedite ongoing vaccination efforts.

"To help treat COVID-19 patients and protect front-line health workers in India, the United States has identified supplies of therapeutics, rapid diagnostic test kits, ventilators, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that will immediately be made available for India", a statement by NSC Spokesperson Emily Horne read.

India has also restricted the export of its domestically produced vaccines to meet Indian demand. However, the Biden administration has put a curb on the export of these items under a wartime law, the US Defence Production Act.

She said the United States has already provided India some $1.4 billion in health assistance, emergency relief supplies, pandemic training for Indian state and local health officials, and ventilators.
