Essendon, Hawthorn and Carlton will leave Melbourne early for their interstate matches this weekend and still plan to return to Victoria after their respective round 11 games despite the return of strict protocols.

"The Hawks were trying to leave today either straight to Darwin or via Queensland and now Northern Territory are shutting the border so they can't get in the state to play the game".

South Australia has closed its border to any travellers from Greater Melbourne from 6pm on Wednesday as a COVID-19 cluster of cases there continues to grow.

It means the AFL will now have to seek an exemption for the Adelaide Crows to travel for Sunday's clash with Richmond at the MCG.

Professor Spurrier said she would recommend that anybody who was at the ground for the match get a COVID-19 test as a precaution, but especially if they developed any symptoms.

The Bombers and the Blues flew out of Melbourne on Wednesday, several days earlier than planned.

The club was notified by the AFL late last night of the decision to leave for Perth this morning, with the Bombers now scheduled to face the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium on Saturday night.

Anybody who has come to South Australia from Greater Melbourne since May 20 is required to self-isolate, where they will be tested on days one, five and 13.

They have been asked to isolate, with one of those three still in Melbourne.

He said: "At this point, the second most powerful official in the country, Helen McNamara, is the deputy cabinet secretary". Nadra Ahmed, of the National Care Association, said Dominic Cummings' remarks about care homes were disappointing.

The stadium is one of a growing list of venues across Melbourne visited by positive cases, leaving state health officials rushing to test and trace across the city of five million, which endured a hard four-month lockdown after an outbreak previous year.

Marvel Stadium is set to host a top-of-the-table clash between Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs on Friday night - the first of four AFL games in the Victorian capital this weekend.

AFL games scheduled in Melbourne for the coming weekend are now allowed to go ahead with fans at up to 85 percent capacity, but government officials warned public events could yet face fresh restrictions.

"This is subject to how we go over the next 24 hours".

"We will just travel and when we land we'll get tested".

Bulldogs players and staff were all tested on Tuesday and cleared of having COVID-19 after being linked to a growing outbreak in Melbourne.

Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli said players were prepared to adapt to the changing conditions to keep the season running as scheduled.

Asked if the government would make changes to vaccine eligibility in light of the new COVID-19 outbreak, Victorian Health Minister Martin Foley said this was being explored.

The last-minute move comes after it was revealed Melbourne's COVID-19 outbreak had grown to nine cases overnight.
