All under-40s to be offered alternative to AstraZeneca vaccine

European and United Kingdom medicine regulators have said the vaccine is safe and effective, and that its benefits far outweigh any side effect risks, but several other countries have recommended using it only in certain age groups.

And one United Kingdom scientist said that for most people the probability of surviving the year is "much greater for people who accept any vaccine when offered than if they decline it".

The team of researchers compared data on 281,264 people - about four fifths were women - and compared this with data from the general population.

Subsequent deliveries of the COVID-19 vaccine will be used to vaccinate other eligible members of the population.

They found no increase in the rate of arterial clots, such as heart attacks or strokes.

In a linked opinion piece, Professor Paul Hunter at the University of East Anglia said the new study improves understanding of the population risk of thrombotic events after the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, but it does not change the conclusions of the United Kingdom and European medicines regulators that the benefits of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine "far outweigh its risks for most age groups".

'Among recipients of ChAdOx1-S (the Oxford /AstraZeneca vaccine) increased rates of venous thromboembolic events, including cerebral venous thrombosis, were observed, ' they said. He maintained that COVAX has assured Pakistan of providing at least 100,000 doses of mRNA vaccine of Pfizer BioNtech by June this year.

"RAT is a good screening test for symptomatic and can potentially reduce the number of RT-PCRs needed to diagnose Covid-19". As of today, India has 2,506 molecular testing laboratories, including RT-PCR, TrueNat, CBNAAT and other platforms.

Previously, the MHRA has said the balance of risk for the AstraZeneca vaccine against Covid is very favourable for older people but "more finely balanced" for younger groups, who do not tend to suffer serious coronavirus illness.

Up to April 28, the MHRA had received 242 reports of blood clots accompanied by low blood platelet count in the United Kingdom, all in people who had AstraZeneca, out of around 28.5 million doses given. More are expected to be announced tomorrow in its weekly report.

Vaccines are the best way out of this pandemic and provide strong protection against COVID-19.

Pakistan was supposed to get the first tranche of AstraZeneca's Covishield vaccine through COVAX in March but the vaccine supply was delayed after the Serum Institute of India (SII) diverted the supplies to meet its domestic needs, officials said.

The current target is 60,000 persons.

Early research has raised hopes in the Government that either of the two approaches can nullify the threat from existing and new variants, it is understood.

A second batch of the coronavirus vaccines has been committed in June alongside "a little over 0.1 million" of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine doses, the federal government official said, adding that even Moderna's vaccine could be supplied to Pakistan through COVAX.
