Billionaire Bill Gates and Melinda Gates said in a joint statement on Monday that they have made a decision to end their marriage.

They said they would continue their involvement in the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, but that "we no longer believe we can grow as a couple in this next phase of our lives".

"We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life", it added.

The couple's philanthropy has always been deeply rooted in their relationship and marriage - the day before they Wednesday in Hawaii, Bill's mother, Mary, who had been trying to convince him to dramatically increase his charity, gave Melinda a letter which closed with the words "From those to whom much is given, much is expected".

The couple, who have frequently been among the richest couples on earth for decades now, is estimated to be worth well over $100 billion dollars.

In her 2019 memoir, "The Moment of Lift", Melinda Gates wrote about her childhood, life and private struggles as the wife of a public icon and stay-at-home mom with three kids.

Bill and Melinda Gates announced Monday that they are divorcing. She worked as a product manager as part of the first class of MBA graduates to join the company and eventually rose through the ranks to become general manager of information products.

Their philanthropy issued almost $55 billion in total grant payments through the end of 2019, focusing on addressing the inequities in global health and US education systems.

Bill and Melinda Gates were married in 1994.

The couple have been at the forefront of major philanthropic activities across the world.

He stepped down as Microsoft chief executive in 2008 to devote more time to philanthropy and later left the board, keeping only the title of "founder and technology advisor".
