Gunman Attacks Birthday Party, Kills 6 Adults, Himself, Colorado Police Say

Perhaps the most infamous shooting in the state of Colorado came in 1999 two students went on a shooting spree at Columbine High School, killing 13 people before they took their own lives.

A man fatally shot six other people including his girlfriend and then killed himself at a birthday party in Colorado Springs, Colorado, early on Sunday, sparing the children who were present.

There were children attending the party who were not wounded in the shooting.

Colorado Springs police responded shortly after midnight to an emergency call at a mobile home park, where they found six adults shot dead and one adult male who was seriously injured. One of the dead is the suspect in the shooting. He walked inside and opened fire before shooting himself, police said.

Freddie Marquez, 33, said his mother-in-law was one of the victims and that he was at the party but left around 10.30pm on Saturday.

The birthday party was for one of the people who was killed, the outlet noted.

Neighbor Yenifer Reyes told The Denver Post she woke to the sound of many gunshots. Police say those children are now with family members.

It took place as Americans observed Mother's Day on Sunday, "celebrating the women in our lives", Colorado Governor Jared Polis said in a statement.

No motive has been established for the shootings nor has the name of the gunman been released.

Colorado Springs Police Chief Vince Niski said "my heart breaks for the families" in Sunday's attack and promised to support them.

"Multiple lives were taken today by this awful act of violence".

"My vow to this community and to the families who have lost someone today, is that this department will do everything we can to find you the answers you deserve and be here for you with an unwavering support", Niski said in the police statement. Like Polis, he said he was grieving with those lost at the birthday party.

The killings are the latest gun-related murders to rock the US; President Joe Biden has called such shootings "an global embarassment" andhas vowed to tighten restrictions on firearms.
