Earlier, the office of the Santa Clara County medical examiner and coroner had released the names of eight people who were killed in the shooting at a Valley Transportation Authority rail yard. Bomb squads searched the complex, according to sheriff's spokesman Deputy Russell Davis.

Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith said Cassidy took his own life as police closed in on him.

"He just thought that some people got more easy-going things at work, and he'd get the harder jobs", she said.

California Governor Gavin Newsom said at a Wednesday afternoon news conference that the massacre was a symptom of a larger American problem. I think numbness is what we all feel ... it raises the question of what's happening in the United States and what's wrong.

This month alone, there were more than 60 mass shootings in the United States.

The gunman, the eight victims shot dead, and a survivor who was hospitalized in critical condition were all employees of the transit agency situated near the city's airport, officials said. The victims were found in two buildings on the site. They appeared to all be men and ranged in age between 29 and 63.

Samuel Cassidy, 57, a maintenance worker of the VTA, San Jose, on Wednesday gunned down eight of his co-workers and critically injured another in one of the deadliest shootings in California state this year.

His comments come as the Taoiseach said more than 2.5 million doses of Covid vaccine would be administered by the end of Tuesday. Almost one million people in Ontario aged 40 and older have received the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Cassidy had worked for Valley Transportation Authority since at least 2012, according to the public payroll and pension database Transparent California, first as a mechanic from 2012 to 2014, then as someone who maintained substations.

Last year, he earned a salary of $102,000, plus benefits and $20,000 in overtime, the records showed. She had a court case against Cassidy in 2009, claiming that he threatened her and sexually assaulted her.

'A awful tragedy has happened today and our thoughts and love go out to the VTA family, ' Glenn Hendricks, chairman of the VTA board, told reporters.

The victims, VTA employees, were working at a light rail maintenance facility. It is considered the heart of Silicon Valley, a global center of technological innovation where some of America's biggest tech companies are based.

San Jose City Councilman Raul Peralez said Rudometkin was a close friend. Police said a separate investigation is going on in the fire.

The fire brigade put down the fire within a few hours.

In a statement from the White House, U.S.President Joe Biden said he and Vice President Kamala Harris had been briefed on the shootings. Mass gun violence has escalated considerably as the USA emerges out from the worst of the pandemic this spring. He was running around the building to save others' lives.
