According to it, B.1.617.1 is found in 41 countries, B.1.617.2 in 54 countries and B.1.617.3 in six.

The report said B.1.617 had shown increased transmissibility, while disease severity and risk of infection were under investigation.

While the B.1.617.2 found in India is named Delta, B.1.1.7 found in America is Alpha, B.1.351 found in South Africa is named Beta and the variant P.1 found in Brazil is named Gamma.

When counting up the total number of countries and regions reporting each variant, the World Health Organization added together those from which it had official and unofficial information.

The variant, known as B.1.617, was first detected in India in late past year.

The B.1.617 viruses are divided in three lineages - B.1.617.1, B.1.617.2 and B.1.617.3.

Health authorities in Thailand had confirmed the country's first cases of the variant first identified in India in a Thai woman and her 4-year-old son who were reportedly put in state quarantine since arriving from Pakistan, it said. The mortality rate rose to a one-month high of 1.16 percent.
