Mr. Biden will commemorate his first Memorial Day as Commander-in-Chief by celebrating the sacrifice of the state.

President Biden honored America's war dead at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day by laying a wreath at the hallowed burial ground and extolling the sacrifices of the fallen for the pursuit of democracy.

Following the ceremony at around 10:30 am EST, Mr. Biden will address the 153rd National Memorial Ceremony. He died at the age of 46 from cancer.

Biden on Sunday gave a somber speech in New Castle, Delaware, near his home in Wilmington, at a Memorial Day observance ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park, again paying tribute to Beau.

"Our son did not die in Iraq, but he came back - went as an incredibly healthy young man and came back with a severe brain tumor because his [living quarters] was just downwind from those burn pits - I don't know if that's the reason".

"Folks, you know, despite all the pain, I know the pride you feel in the loved one and - that you lost and those who are still serving - the pride and the bravery in the service to our great American experiment." he said.

The tent was overhead, but the cold wind blew the rain over the guests. Mr. Biden leaned forward during the 75-minute ceremony of "God Breath America". When it was time, he salutes the wreath on the monument. The national holiday is now held on the last Monday in May of each year. Vice President Kamala Harris, First Lady Jill Biden and Second Gentleman Douglass Emhoff also attended.

He asked the federal government to work with Indigenous groups on researching the fates of missing children. In 2018, Pope Francis rejected a direct appeal for an apology from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Ahead of Memorial Day, members of the US armed forces place flags in front of more than 260,000 headstones at Arlington National Cemetery, in Arlington, Virginia, May 27, 2021.

Beau Biden served two terms as Delaware's attorney general before declaring a run for governor, and many saw in him the same aspirations that brought his father to the White House.

That story, which Biden told Friday at a Virginia air force base, was one of the many moments in which Biden's son defined the Memorial Day weekend.

"This Memorial Day, remember that not all of us are called to make the ultimate sacrifice".

Referring to the cemetery's Section 60, the final resting place of servicemen and servicewomen killed in America's most recent conflicts, Biden said "when I walk through, it reminds me of the cost of war".

"The American creed is the connective tissue that binds us", Biden said.

He largely avoided the particulars of global affairs on Sunday, though he pledged to press Russia's Vladimir Putin on human rights during their summit in Geneva next month and said that the moment was right to show the world, and namely China, that the United States was ready to lead again after four years of a largely inward-looking foreign policy under President Donald Trump.
