The cable vehicle system's website says the service was inaugurated in 1970, with two cars and one stop at a midway point between the lakeside and mountaintop.

A photo taken by The Italian Firefighters "Vigili del Fuoco" shows a cable vehicle that crashed to the ground in the resort town of Stresa on the shores of Lake Maggiore in the Piedmont region.

"This is the final toll of the accident as the auto was carrying 11 passengers when the disaster happened", Simone Bobbio, a spokesman for Italy's alpine rescue service for the Piedmont region, told Reuters. The cause hasn't been determined.

In this handout photo provided by the Italian state police, emergency workers surround the wreckage of a cable auto that fell from the Stresa-Alpine-Mottarone line on May 23, 2021 in Stresa, Italy.

According to the newspaper Corriere della Sera, the cable vehicle system had reopened April 24 after a closure during Italy's coronavirus-related lockdown.

In February, she posted an anti-transgender sign outside her office, which sits across from Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, a progressive with similar star power, has become a favorite target.

Sunday was a attractive, sunny day in the area, and Milan hypothesized that families were taking advantage of the weather to enjoy a day in nature after months of lockdown. Italy only reopened a few weeks ago, allowing travel between regions after a winter of COVID-19 restrictions.

It said 11 people were in the cabin that fell.

According to officials, two children, ages five and nine, were transferred to a hospital following the accident.

Mottarone reaches a height of 1,491 meters and overlooks the picturesque lake and the surrounding Alps of Italy's Piedmont region. Another injured person, an adult, had been also been taken to hospital by helicopter, she added.

The mountain features a small amusement park, Alpyland, that has a children's roller coaster offering 360-degree views of the scenery.
