WASHINGTON-Three people including a four-year-old girl were shot in New York City's Times Square after gunfire broke out in a dispute that they were apparently not involved in, the city's top police official said Saturday.

Another victim was a 24-year-old woman from Rhode Island, who was hit in her thigh, and a 43-year-old woman from New Jersey, who was shot in the foot, according to Shea.

A 23-year-old tourist from Rhode Island also was shot in the leg.

"It appears that all three are innocent bystanders", Shea said. All were taken to Bellevue Hospital and were expected to survive.

They were hospitalized in Manhattan, and their lives were not in danger, said NY police commissioner Dermot Shea, at a press briefing.

News reported the shooting occurred at 5 p.m. ET at 7th Avenue and West 44th Street.

The investigation was continuing.

The NYPD has released a photo and video of a person of interest connected to the shooting. Shea said he had "no doubt" the suspect would be caught shortly.

A gun has not been recovered but police found three shell casings from a.25 caliber gun at the scene, Shea said.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said the victims were in stable condition.

"The perpetrators of this senseless violence are being tracked down and the NYPD will bring them to justice", he wrote. "The flood of illegal guns into our city must stop".

"How many more kids do we need to be shot before we realize that bad policies have consequences and we need action and we need policies regarding laws that have consequences", Shea said. According to the NYPD's city crime statistics, shooting incidents this year through May 2 have skyrocketed 83% over the same period a year ago.

The week prior, gun violence was up 253%.
