The shooting took place a little before 7 a.m. PT (1400 GMT) at a light rail yard run by the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority near the city's main airport.

Santa Clara County Sheriff's Deputy Russell Davis told reporters that there were "there are multiple injuries and multiple fatalities" and the shooter was now dead. Davis said multiple investigators are on the scene "trying to figure out exactly what happened". The authorities confirmed that the suspect was dead.

"We are in close contact with local law enforcement and monitoring this situation closely", California Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a tweet Wednesday.

Police did not immediately give any details on how the shooter was killed, or about the type of weapon used.

Several people were receiving medical treatment, said San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo.

"Our hearts are pained for the families of those we have lost in this horrific shooting", Liccardo tweeted. The victims include transit employees.

The VTA tweeted Wednesday morning that the rail yard had been evacuated and that service to the system would not be disrupted.
