But uptake still varies by county: In Allen County, vaccinations increased by 68% during the first week of Vax-A-Million, while Auglaize County saw an 83% uptick and Putnam County saw 51% more immunizations.

The victor of a full-ride scholarship to an OH university will also be every Wednesday night; that victor is drawn from a pool of vaccinated Ohioans aged 12-17.

The US state of OH has announced the winners of its first lottery draw for Covid-19 vaccine recipients.

Four more winners of the $1m prize and four college scholarship winners will be announced each Wednesday for the next four weeks.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, a Republican, launched the special lottery on 12 May and credits it with reinvigorating roll-out of the jabs.

More than two million Ohioans entered the drawing to win a $1 million prize, and 104,386 Ohioans age 12 to 17 entered the drawing for a college scholarship.

The next drawings in OH will be on June 2, June 9, June 16, and June 23. Costello just finished eighth grade, according to the Springfield News-Sun and Governor Mike DeWine posted a photo of himself with the Costello family on Twitter. "If $1 million isn't incentive enough, I don't know what would be". But with the vaccine now readily available, the real waste, "is a life lost to Covid-19", the governor said.

Bugenske, who works at GE Aviation and is pursuing a master's degree in aerospace engineering, urged all Ohioans to get their COVID-19 vaccine.

Bugenske was reportedly eager to receive her vaccine, and even pushed for her elderly grandmother to have her shots.

"I was really thankful at that moment that there was a bench nearby, because I needed to sit down", she said.

Ohio is relying on federal coronavirus relief dollars to fund its Vax-a-million program, which will give away $1 million apiece to five Ohioans who have had at least one shot, along with five Ohio teenagers under age 18 who will be eligible for four-year scholarships to any Ohio college or university.

Mr DeWine, a Republican, announced the program on May 12 to boost lagging vaccination rates.

Joseph Costello, of Englewood near Dayton, was announced Wednesday as the first victor of the full-ride college scholarship.

This Covid-19 lottery heard around the world has rejuvenated the vaccination initiative around my native state.

However, not everyone was impressed.

There's an effort led by OH state Rep. Jena Powell, a fellow Republican, to pass legislation stopping the untraditional state lottery.

More than 5.2 million people in OH had at least started the vaccination process as of Monday, or about 45 per cent of the state.

Whether your state has a vaccine lottery or not, it's a great idea to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

Nationwide, more than 165 million Americans have received at least one dose, which is almost 50% of the population.

The first vaccinated Ohioans hit the jackpot in the state's "Vax-a-Million" lottery on Wednesday. The deadline for new registrations is just before midnight on Sunday.
