Appearing on Fox New Sunday, Kinzinger said it was vital that Congress established a 9/11-style commission into the attack to get to the bottom of what happened.

As Senate Democrats push for a bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6 riot at the Capitol, Sen.

The House approved a bill to form a commission last week, but some Senate Republicans, including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, oppose the measure.

Collins said it was vital to understand why law enforcement wasn't better prepared for the attack by an angry mob of Donald Trump supporters who stormed the Congress in an effort to block it from certifying the results of the November Presidential election. But he opposed impeachment, eased his criticisms of Trump, and opposed the creation of the commission.

The attack on the U.S. Capitol left many officials on both sides of the political aisle shaken when they faced armed attackers and were forced to barricade the House Chamber doors against insurrectionists.

"They don't have the Romney's, Little Ben Sasse's and Cheney's of the world", he contended, referring to Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, who supported the bill in a floor vote Wednesday afternoon and Sens. But the measure faces an uncertain fate in the evenly divided Senate.

They will entertain no facts, call no witnesses, gather no evidence that doesn't buttress the singular argument that Donald Trump engineered the riot in order to nullify the election and take over the government.

A further 11 are still considering whether to support the bill, 25 oppose and 10 are unknown. "January 6 should be no different".

Thirty-five Republicans joined Democrats to support passing the bill to create a 9/11-style commission, including all 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump over his role in fueling the January 6 insurrection.

Officer Brian Sicknick, who was among hundreds of officers trying to fight off rioters without the necessary equipment or planning, died following the January 6 riot.
