USA marks anniversary of the killing — George Floyd

A man set out paint ready to create a fresh mural in the square, which has been closed to most vehicle traffic for a year and is filled with flowers and art commemorating Floyd and other Black victims of police violence.

Before heading to the White House, the Floyd family will meet Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Representative Karen Bass, the lead House negotiator on the reform bill.

Floyd's brother Philonise, who appeared on CNN, said he thinks about George "all the time".

As if to highlight the staggering number of U.S. shootings, multiple gunshots rang out Tuesday near the site in Minneapolis where people were marking the anniversary of Floyd's killing.

"We hope to bring comfort to your family by passing this final bill very soon", Pelosi said.

Later, she stood before the cameras outside the White House and softly called out, "say his name".

What happened to George Floyd?

Bridgett Floyd told the crowd in Minneapolis: "We don't want a watered down bill ..." The Democratic president had wanted US lawmakers to finish work on the legislation overhauling police practices by the anniversary of Floyd's death. "This is the closest thing to a block party I've seen in a year".

"Justice would be a world in which George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Eric Garner would still be alive".

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said USA legislators are committed to major police and gun control reforms. The Floyds met late in the day with Democrat Cory Booker of New Jersey and Republican Tim Scott of SC, the Senate's lead negotiators on the bill. "I wish I was negotiating with them", he said, though he also repeated the line of the day that progress was being made.

The Floyd family's meetings with some of Washington's most powerful officials produced plenty of comments about optimism and moving forward.

The coalition - which was formed in November after a season where activism and social justice issues were at the forefront of the National Basketball Association bubble at Walt Disney World - called on senators to pass the sweeping legislation to "honor the memory of Mr. Floyd", who was murdered by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin past year.

The current standoff underscores the political complexities of an issue that's a top concern for many of both parties' voters - Democrats' progressives and voters of color, and Republicans' law-and-order conservatives.

On April 20, former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter by a jury for his role in the murder of Floyd last May outside of a local convenience store. Chauvin was convicted last month of multiple charges. "We face an inflection point", Biden said in a statement issued by the White House afterward.

"We have a long way to go still, but it's starting to take form", Scott said. It quickly turned into a memorial - and also a challenging spot for the city, with police officers not always welcome.

GOP lawmakers have preferred more modest changes. But he also made clear they want to see police reform legislation named after George Floyd signed into law. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said Biden wanted the meeting to be private "to have a real conversation and preserve that with the family".

"President Biden has left it to members of Congress, and it's in their hands right now". A bipartisan group of lawmakers in the House and Senate has been working toward that end. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has said he wouldn't support any bill that ended qualified immunity. Underlying the emotional day, however, was the inability of Congress to meet the president's deadline to advance police reform legislation by the anniversary of Floyd's death.

The Biden administration has signaled that the Justice Department will shift its focus to prioritize civil rights and policing reform after a tumultuous four years under President Donald Trump.

Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris gathered with the Floyd family for about an hour Tuesday afternoon.
