Search Continues for Missing 8 Year in Lake Erie

The body of an eight-year-old boy who went missing on Lake Erie Saturday afternoon has been recovered.

Sanchuk says further details will be released when they're available and declined further comment Sunday, "out of respect for the dead and his family".

According to police, the child was seen swimming in the Lake after abandoning a floating raft and attempted to swim back to shore. The OPP's underwater search and recovery unit arrived to assist with the investigation Sunday morning.

The boy's body was found about 10 metres off the shore in the town, a popular destination for beachgoers across Norfolk County.

They say that family members contacted them after they were unable to locate him.

He also suggested social distancing, wearing of face masks and working from home could be extended beyond the final stage of the government's "road map".

The Ontario Provincial Police said on Sunday at around 3:34 p.m., a kayaker came across a small vessel on a sandbar in Lake St. Clair near Lakeshore Park Road. He also thanked the residents of Turkey Point who provided comfort and assistance to the grieving family.

Members of the OPP's Norfolk detachment helped in the search along with OPP Aviation Services, the Norfolk marine unit, paramedics, firefighters, and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre.

A Brantford man who saw the search efforts called it a massive operation.

"It's a eerie feeling", Simon said.
