Former AHS North Zone lead doctor charged with sexual offences

De Villiers was the medical officer for Alberta Heath Services' North Zone, based in Grande Prairie, from 2004 to July, 2020 when he left to assume the chief medical health officer position for IH.

Grande Prairie RCMP says that the 52-year-old has been charged following an investigation into allegations of sexual assault.

"As this matter is now before the courts no further information can be released", Grande Prairie RCMP said in a news release.

In a teleconference Wednesday afternoon, Health Minister Adrian Dix offered little comment on de Villiers' arrest.

De Villiers is in custody awaiting a bail hearing which is expected to take place tomorrow, June 9.

"This is a serious matter that we can not comment on this evening.

"All further questions should be directed to the RCMP", Interior Health said in a statement.
