Kamala Harris to visit U.S.-Mexico border, assess migration

BREAKING White House defends Kamala's flip-flop on border visit

Ms Harris will travel to El Paso, Texas, with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, according to White House officials.

The vice president took close to three months to announce her visit while traveling overseas and being lambasted by Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei for not being on the "same side of the coin" as him.

Harris' spokeswoman, Symone Sanders, said in a statement that the visit was part of Harris' "ongoing work" in addressing "the root causes of migration from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras".

Harris hasn't visited the border yet, and the number of illegal immigrants crossing the border continues to sky-rocket.

Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday wore a new hat in the Biden administration - publicizing the expanded Child Tax Credit - while she has taken criticism for failing to visit the border since she was named border czar in March.

President Kamala Harris will be visiting the US-Mexico border on Friday, June 25.

Green Party Leader Annamie Paul rejects calls to resign, Report
That post has since been deleted, though Atwin told CTV's "Question Period" on Sunday that "I certainly stand by what I'm saying". Green MP Jenica Atwin - who has since left the Green caucus to join the Liberals - ripped into Paul's statement on Twitter.

Psaki said again that Harris had previously said that she would be "open to going to the border at the appropriate time".

The number of undocumented migrants reaching the US-Mexico border is at the highest level in more than 20 years.

Asked about a connection, White House press secretary Jen Psaki acknowledged to reporters in Washington that the administration was aware of Trump's pending travel plans. "Is there still more work to do?" Shortly after the news of Harris' visit began circulating, Trump released a statement claiming that if he and Abbott "weren't going there next week, she would have never gone!" Harris will get there five days ahead of former President Donald Trump, who announced last week he would be heading to Texas on June 30 to survey the border alongside the state's Republican Governor Greg Abbott. Droves of young migrants without responsible adults arrived there and were welcomed despite the COVID-19 pandemic. And if you look just to a couple of months ago when 6,000 children were in border patrol facilities, we are now at the point where there is far less than 1,000.

"We have a strategy, we are executing on our strategy, I have confidence in our strategy", Mayorkas told members of Congress during a recent hearing. Many linked the trip to Trump's planned visit.

President Joe Biden assigned Harris the task of addressing the root causes of migration of thousands of people from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras who cross the USA border from Mexico.
