UK PM Johnson, Australias Morrison agree historic free trade agreement

The in-principle deal will allow farmers to ship tens of thousands of tonnes of meat to the United Kingdom tax-free every year as soon as it comes into force and remove tariffs on nearly all other Australian products, the government says.

This is global Britain at its best - looking outwards and striking deals that deepen our alliances and help ensure every part of the country builds back better from the pandemic.

The deal eliminates tariffs on imported Australian goods such as wine, swimwear and confectionery, it said.

UK PM Boris Johnson and Australia's Prime Minister Scott Morrison speak at 10 Downing Street.

The UK has secured a free trade agreement with Australia, which will bring an end to the 5% tariff on Scotch whisky.

Britain is Australia's fifth largest trading partner with two-way goods and services valued at 36.6 billion Australian dollars ($28.2 billion) a year.

The Prime Minister said: "Today marks a new dawn in the UK's relationship with Australia, underpinned by our shared history and common values". The government also said it would seek to increase agricultural exports to Asia and the Pacific.

Caps on tarrif-free beef will be phased out over 15 years. This will help Scotch whisky distillers continue to expand exports to Australia, which have nearly doubled over the last decade, making Australia our eighth largest market by value.

Caithness - a good 'sight' for tomorrow morning's partial solar eclipse
However, observers in the United Kingdom and Ireland will see a crescent Sun instead of a ring, as this will be a partial eclipse. At any given point along the path, the eclipse will be visible for a maximum length of 3 minutes and 51 seconds .

"This free trade agreement is more about symbolism than immediately tangible material benefits", said Ben Wellings, senior lecturer in politics and global relations at Monash University.

The Queen and other members of the Royal Family had hosted a drinks reception for world leaders at the summit, but as Australia is not in the G7, it was not invited to that part of the day.

Twenty-four MPs wrote to U.K. Trade Secretary Liz Truss to demand proper parliamentary scrutiny of the deal, according to the Financial Times. British meat producers have expressed concerns that they wouldn't be able to compete with cheap imports from Australia.

Mr Morrison and his British counterpart Boris Johnson announced the deal on Tuesday night (AEST) after sealing an in-principle agreement.

"A trade deal with Australia will come as great news for many of our members who have always been exporting there as well as those who are hoping to expand their trade ambitions, said Mike Cherry, National Chair of the Federation of Small Businesses".

An FTA with Australia is also dubbed as a gateway into the fast-growing Indo-Pacific region, which covers India.

"This is an ambitious free trade agreement, " Morrison told reporters.

The free flow of data provisions and the ban on data localisation will allow our SMEs in particular to explore the market without the cost of having to set up servers.
