RCMP confirmed that officer Shelby Patton died while on duty in Wolseley Sask. on Saturday

"Very sad news from Saskatchewan tonight", Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote on Twitter.

"I am heartbroken for her and her family", Blackmore said.

Shelby Patton, 26, was following two suspects who were in a stolen truck from Manitoba on Saturday morning, Saskatchewan RCMP Commanding Officer and Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore said.

Two suspects, a man and a woman, were arrested around 10 a.m. on Saturday in connection with the incident. He died at the scene.

Blackmore says Patton leaves behind a wife, who she spoke with this morning.

She said he cultivated a reputation as a hardworking, dedicated police officer.

"No one should have to wake up and learn their family member died as a result of doing their job and this is what happened today to Constable Patton's loved ones".

Cross was prohibited from entering the property of Loudon County Public Schools for any event unless permitted to do so. Cross said that because of his Christian faith, he could not recognize "a biological boy can be a girl and vice versa".

Wolseley Mayor Gerald Hill explained the situation is hard to comprehend, especially for an officer early in his career. "Just starting out, just starting out", Hill said to CTV News.

Patton had worked at the Indian Head Detachment since 2015, according to the Saskatchewan RCMP, the entirety of his six years and four months with the police force.

"This morning, I, along with the Indian Head detachment commander and the Saskatchewan RCMP chaplain, had to tell Const. Patton's wife the hard news that he is not coming home", Blackmore said.

To show respect for the fallen officer, flags at RCMP detachments across the country will be flying at half-mast.

A councillor in Wolseley said the area in the centre of his town remains blocked off. "On behalf of all us [at Regina police] we stand beside you and offer support through this hard time".

"We grieve the tragic loss of [Const.] Shelby Patton", tweeted the Halifax Police.
