Birthday shooting

Three children were among a group of people shot at an outdoor birthday party for a one-year-old child in Toronto's Rexdale neighbourhood Saturday evening, police said.

The townhouses on Tandridge Crescent and Byng Avenue in the Etobicoke neighborhood of the Canadian city were cordoned off at around 8pm with emergency personnel swarming the scene following the incident.

Along with the five-year-old girl, an 11-year-old boy and a 23-year-old male were shot, with the man suffering a gunshot wound to the leg.

All were transported to trauma centres via an emergency rush.

The Toronto Sun and CP24 are reporting that paramedics treated five people with injuries suffered in the attack.

She didn't say what condition they were in, but paramedics earlier said one child suffered life-threatening injuries, while another was in serious condition and the third suffered minor injuries.

Alberta moves to Stage 3 of reopening plan on Canada Day
Premier Jason Kenney says 70.2 per cent of Albertans aged 12 and over have now received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Health Minister Tyler Shandro joined Kenney for the announcement and to help unveil a sign declaring Alberta "Open for Summer".

Parks said a one-year-old boy who was grazed by a bullet did not require treatment in hospital. It is not known at this time if the fifth victim sustained gunshot injuries.

"I really, really hope in this case, so we can bring these people to justice and apply the full weight of the law, that people who were around there or there who saw something. they will confide in the police or in Crime Stoppers so we can track these people down and deal with them", Tory said.

Toronto Police Supt. Ron Taverner said the five-year-old's condition was critical at one point, but Const. Edward Parks reported it as "stable" Saturday morning and then "serious, life-threatening" by the afternoon.

"There's nothing more brazen than children outside in a gathering and this kind of violence happening outside right in front of them and them being victims", said Skinner.

It is believed they were on foot at the scene of the shooting and a vehicle was waiting nearby.

In a later update, Duty Inspector Kelly Skinner confirmed that there is more than one suspect involved. "We absolutely need your help", said Skinner, appealing for any witnesses. "There are three children who were shot here tonight", she said.
